Victorian Trade Card AMERICAN SHOE TIP CO. (A. S. T. C. Co.) CAT DISCOVERS BIRDS NESTING IN AN OLD SHOE WITH WORN OUT TOE --"Children's Shoes with The A.S. T. Co. Black Tip on Them a Specialty They Double the Value of the Shoe" 3.25 x 5" light-weight card stock.
Vivid chromo-lithograph on the front of a cat trying to extricate a baby bird from a nest built in an old discarded shoe, while the mother bird protests.
Ad text on the back for a boot, shoe, and slipper dealer: Fredrick C. Dow, Manchester, N. H.. Undated, but likely c. 1875-1885. The shoe tips this company
made were thin protective ridges applied to the toes of shoes to keep the leather there from wearing through. The chromo-lithograph shows what a shoe
with the toe worn out is good for - nothing except perhaps as a nest holder. Many shoe store ads of the time advertised that they applied or replaced these tips
or others somewhat like them. Some brand new shoes were shipped with these protective tips already applied. There were competitor products of the same nature,
but the A. S. T. C. Co. advertised widely. They almost always used just the abbreviated company name (acronym) in their ads. Condition is good, with minor soiling.
