American Republics Line/Moore McCormack: Us Yanks like things big. For example, this super-sized cruise brochure from 1940-1941 for the BRAZIL, ARGENTINA, and URUGUAY.
It unfolds to 20" by 21" and has eight pages, meaning that your arms are spread open 40" to take it all in. What glamour! The brochure opens to beautiful isometric cutaways of the Sports and Sun decks, all populated with little passengers. The artwork is excellent. A bold script headline announces, "Leisure and Play Decks of the Fleet!"
The next pages show the three decks of passenger accommodations on the BRAZIL and ARGENTINA while further pages shows the same on the URUGUAY. Black and white photos around the edges show public room and sample cabins.
Although undated, two clues reveal the era. First, the ships carry the American Republics Line logo on their funnels. Post-WW2 they carried Moore-Mac's big red M. Also, the text mentions cruising through "neutral" waters, a big draw in the opening days of Americans called the "European conflict".
A dozen years earlier this trio was introduced as Panama Pacific's PENNSYLVANIA, VIRGINIA, and CALIFORNIA for coast-to coast service through the Panama Canal. But Panama Pacific floundered in the late 1930s. The U.S. Government took the ships, modernized them by knocking off a funnel, and created American Republics Line to provide First Class travel to South America. Moore McCormack operated the ships.
Good condition with some separation along the folds.
