    Description

Old F. Missler Bremen Steamship Emigrant Ticket Wallet Offering an early linen folding ticket and document wallet. These were given to emigrants by ticket agent F. Missler, 30 Bahnhofstrasse, Bremen, Germany. The F. Missler is one of the more famous "ghost" ships in emigration and immigration lore. No ship by that name existed. The confusion stems from the fact that Freidrich Missler was the biggest ticket agent in Bremen, and shipped emigrants out from Germany to Canada, the US, South America, and South Africa in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He usually gave emigrants a small wallet to hold their ticket and other papers. That wallet has a picture of a steamship on the front, and the name "F.Missler" in large letters. As a result, for decades, people have begun their genealogy search looking for the SS MISSLER, only to find out later Missler was the shipping line agent. Freidrich Missler had a good working arrangement with the North German Lloyd Line.  The ship on this wallet is not identified but most likely was
the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse of the North German Lloyd Line which went into service in 1897 and thus helps to date this wallet.) Destination was probably Hoboken NJ. The inside phrase Schnelldampler nach Amerika appears to be Dutch. This one appears to have When folded open, this wallet measures approx. 8 1/2" by 7 1/8". It is in remarkably good condition but is a bit dirty, see photos. I'm sure it was a treasure to someone who was coming to America......
