Description
CD rom containing 27, highly-detailed documentary drawings (plans), scanned at very high resolution from the original set which come from the archive collection of the RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH HISTORICAL SOCIETY.From 1982 until his death in 1996, the founder of The RMS Queen Elizabeth Historical Society HAROLD PHILPOT, (pictured) took on the monumental task - his "burden" as he put it - to complete a set of scale documentary drawings of his beloved ship, the RMS Queen Elizabeth. His project was in fact a labor of love. These unique plans represent over ten years for Harold at his drawing table, many many thousands of hours concentration.
Harold was a professional draughtsman for Chrysler Motors (body design) both in England his homeland and in the USA his adopted home. He migrated to the USA on the Queen Elizabeth, in 1950 and sailed on several other times.
These drawings are the result of his research trips to England, where he copied original builders plans (what is left of them) from Lloyds Register of Shipping London and also from studying hundreds of photographs of the ship taken during her construction, from the University of Glasgow where the John Brown of Clydebank archives are kept and the Cunard Steamship archives from the University of Liverpool. His extensive research was further aided by help from the close friendships he had with many ex crew members, especially that of his close friend Commodore Geoffrey T. Marr, the ship's last British master. The two of them corresponded weekly, with Commodore Marr helping answer the multitude of questions Harold had on the ships layout and working. Relying upon his exceptional drawing skills and attention to detail, mr philpot produced from the remaining original builders plans and photographs, the most detailed, accurate and complete set of drawings of the RMS Queen Elizabeth in existence anywhere. The reason for this is that during his trips to England and Scotland, Harold discovered that most
of the original, John Brown builders plans had inexplicably gone missing over the years and no one seems to know where. Also, the ship underwent many changes during construction at Clydebank between keel laying in 1936 to 1940 when she was completed, changes which were not recorded on the builders drawings. Philpot's plans are thus a true representation of the ship AS BUILT, as she sailed (pre the 1966 cruise refit).
These remarkable drawings show all the necessary information for a super-detailed and accurate model of the liner. But not only for the satisfaction of ship modelers, they will provide hours of enjoyment for all those who admire this beautiful ship or ocean liners in general, and for those who appreciate the ART and penmanship of hand drawn ship ship plans.
The incredible amount of detail shown in the drawings is due to Harold's attention to detail and the small scale at which he drew them at
which is 1/4 “ = 1 foot or 1: 48 scale. This is the same scale as the original builders plans. Many of the original sheets (professional Mylar thick drafting film) which these scans were made from, were over 20 feet long and 4 feet wide. (see photos above) They show rivetting, shell-plating, Hull lines, body plan, full breadth plan, sections, shell openings, decking, deck houses, deck equipment and machinery , details of lifeboats, detailed working deck plans and much, much more. Harold also included many informative notes relating to the ship and these are scattered throughout the drawings. These plans are very special and reveal many secrets of the ship which held the title as the worlds largest passenger ship for an incredible 56 years from 1940 until 1996! The scans were professionally made at a very high resolution so that the printing out of even very large sheets from the scans, will not result in a loss of quality.
A superb, and unique documentation of a ship which was truly a wonder in maritime architecture.
Below is a list of the 27 drawings and the approximate size which expresses 1:200 scale.
