American Hawaii Cruises: A pre-maiden voyage brochure for one of the most successful second chances in liner history, the rebirth of the S.S. INDEPENDENCE.
This brochure from April 1980 unfolds to four panels. Here the ship is called OCEANIC INDEPENDENCE ("Oceanic" was dropped in 1983 after sister CONSTITUTION joined the fleet). In June 1980 the ship would take her maiden cruise around the Hawaiian Islands.
Inside there are two photos of interest. The first shows a cabin mock-up where the simplicity of the original Henry Dreyfuss designed furniture competes with loud 1970s wallpaper. The second is of the ship in a tropical port. "OCEANIC" has been airbrushed next to INDEPENDENCE but the funnels are still brightly painted in American Export colors. The same photo, with the tropical port removed, is used on the cover. The view was lifted from an AmEx brochure of a generation earlier.
Also included are plans. Eight decks are shown in color-coded detail.
