In a real sense, every sports car ever made owes a debt to the British two-seaters that delighted American servicemen during World War II. The open-air, hug-the-curves, small-two-seater driving experience captivated the Yanks, even as the soldiers' often-enthusiastic driving styles sometimes drew disapproving frowns from the local populace. Among British sports cars, the MG brand was by far the most successful, and that success exploded in 1962 with the launch of the MGB. Over the next eighteen years more than a half-million MGBs would be built at the company's Abingdon, England works.
The timeless appeal of an MGB is driven by its compelling combination of characteristics. Foremost among them is the pure driving experience, especially in the roadsters. Visually, the car's design aesthetic has not lost any of its captivating charm to this day. The interiors of the cars have a cockpit-like focus with their Smiths® gauges, overall simplicity, and classic British style, with just enough creature comfort to make long drives fun. From an owner-involvement standpoint, the ability to easily source replacement parts from multiple suppliers combined with the model's straightforward, serviceable mechanicals mean "driveway mechanics" could be just that. The many MG owners' clubs attest to the model's special emotional connection. MGB owners always wave when they meet each other on the open road.
Offered here is a 1972 MGB in British Racing Green over black under a back convertible top. Originally built in March of 1972, this well-maintained example has been comprehensively refurbished and its performance has been enhanced with the addition of an Eaton® supercharger. The North Carolina car's odometer currently reads 17,190 miles.
The exterior sheet metal is free of dents, dings, or other damage. The British Racing Green paint finish is excellent with a deep, reflective shine and the barest minimum of light patina from age. It is arguably the perfect color for this model. Chrome bumpers (with bumperettes front and rear) and the classic MG slotted front grille are in similarly excellent, well-maintained condition. Other chrome work-including the headlight bezels, driver's-side mirror, door handles, body-side trim pieces, and taillight trim-show equally well. The brushed-metal windshield surround is without flaw; cabin glass is also free of cracks or other imperfections. Proper factory badging, namely the red MG-logo front-grille emblem, small British-Leyland fender badges, and rear-deck MG chrome emblem with MGB model-designation, is all correctly in place. Lighting lenses are clear and uncracked. Original 14-inch, 4-lug, styled steel wheels, with MGB-logo center caps and chrome trim rings, have been freshly mounted with Michelin® XAS 185/70 radial tires. The car's just-renewed black soft top is properly fitted and free of damage, as is the boot cover in place when the top is stowed.
The MGB's interior has all the charm of the classic British roadster. Black leather upholstery with vertically pleated, ventilated center panels is in perfect condition (including on the headrests of the same design, and the center armrest). Interior trim on the doors maintains this look with added thin chrome accents and textured-metal door handles. Black plush carpeting covers the cabin floors with MG-logo-embossed protective carpet mats in place. The original, red-MGB-logo, brushed-metal steering wheel features a wood rim. Arrayed across the dash are five Smiths® gauges-four round, and the odd square oil-pressure gauge. Chrome gauge bezels are in excellent condition for their age, and instrument markings are crisp and unfaded; a combination of toggle switches, dials, pull-levers, and buttons control various mechanical functions. The center console has no radio mounted; an MG-branded fill panel is in place. Two cupholders have been fitted on the console top in front of the stock 4-speed, manual-transmission shift lever.
Under the hood, the fully rebuilt 1800cc, 4-cylinder engine (wearing its proper gold, engine-block paint) makes for a beautiful display in a perfectly clean and orderly space. To the driver's side of the block. the Eaton® M45 supercharger has been professionally installed. Viewed from below, the car's chassis is complete and free of damage including any sign of the sort of compression damage that can result from too-aggressive driving styles. Clearly, the car has been well-treated. A properly installed, stainless-steel exhaust system is a focal point. New brakes and shocks are mounted.
The car's original build and identification tags remain as mounted at the factory.
