Description
Chandris Lines/ Caribbean Cruise Lines: Here's a rare brochure - the BRITTANY's 1963 cruise service from New York to the Caribbean. It never happened. When the June date for the first cruise came around, the BRITTANY was a smothering hulk lying in shallow water off Piraeus. The ship was built after WW2 as Transports Maritimes' BRETAGNE. Chandris bought her in 1960 and converted the liner into the very first Chandris (and by default Celebrity) cruise ship. Caribbean Cruise Lines leased her for ,500 a day and ran a very successful cruise service from the East Coast to Bermuda and the Caribbean.
This fold-out brochure (16" by 18") was printed for the 1963 season. Color photos show the Swimming Pool, Orchid Room, Reception Hall, Continental Dining Room, Lounge, and a wood-grained Formica-lined stateroom. A portrait shows off the BRITTANY's cheerful lines. Rates started at just 5 for a seven day cruise and an itinerary shows ten cruises beginning on June 21, 1963.
Alas, a welder's torch set the ship ablaze on April 8th and the fire consumed the entire ship. This devastating setback meant that Chandris was not able reenter the American cruise market until 1968 with the newly introduced AMERIKANIS.
Very good condition.
