    Description

Union Castle Line: A fold-out (22" by 26") deck plan issued in 1962 while this sleek motorliner still had First and Tourist classes. Each class on the CAPETOWN CASTLE gets their own side of the plan, complete with color-coding and color interior photos.
Interesting to note that there were triple "Bibby cabins" in Tourist Class. In the Bibby system an inner cabin has a narrow passageway leading to a porthole that is squeezed between outer cabins. On C Deck the cabins are three deep, leading to a very long and narrow porthole passageway on the innermost room. The arrangements on the lower B Deck switches back to the traditional inner cabins without portholes.
Interior photos show a style typical to Union Castle ships of this era, a design esthetic best described as "Midlands Housewife". The wives of company board members handled the decoration and their taste was at times (what is a nice way to phrase this?) suspect. Color photos from First Class show the Lounge, Long Gallery, Dining Room, Smoke Room, bedroom of a suite, and a double cabin. Tourist Class photos show the Lounge, Dining Room, Smoke Room, and two cabins.
The CAPETOWN CASTLE was the first U.C. ship to re-enter service after WW2. A boiler room explosion in 1960 killed seven crew. In 1965 twenty gold ingots were stolen from her storeroom. The ship headed off to the breakers in 1967.
    Very good condition.
