    HAWAII'S DECISIVE HOUR
    ....
IN THE EARLY 1850'S THE KING OF HAWAII SOUGHT A TREATY WITH THE UNITED STATES PROVIDING FOR THE ADMISSION OF THE ISLANDS AS A STATE.  THE TREATY WAS NEVER RATIFIED.  BUT IT WAS THE FIRST OFFICIAL STEP IN A MOVEMENT WHICH STRENGTHENED WITH THE YEARS, CULMINATING IN THE ANNEXATION OF HAWAII AUGUST 12, 1898.  THE HISTORIC EVEN TOOK PLACE ON THE BALCONY OF IOLANI PALACE IN HONOLULU.  HAWAII HAD SINCE BECOME A REPUBLIC AND WAS REPRESENTED BY HER PRESIDENT, SANDFORD B. DOLE.  HAROLD M. SEWALL, AMERICAN MINISTER, OFFICIATED FOR THE UNITED STATES.  MR. SEWALL BEGAN THE CEREMONY BY READING THE RESOLUTION TO CONGRESS, SIGNED BY PRESIDENT WILLIAM MCKINLEY, PROVIDING FOR THE ANNEXATION OF HAWAII.  PRESIDENT DOLE ACCEPTED THE RESOLUTION AND FORMALLY TRANSFERRED THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE ISLANDS.  A BUGLE SOUNDED.  TO THE STRAINS OF THE HAWAIIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM, THE FLAG OF HAWAII WAS SLOWLY LOWERED FROM THE CENTRAL PALACE TOWER.  ANOTHER BUGLE CALL AND THE STARS AND STRIPES ROSE TO FLY FROM THE SAME PINNACLE.  TWO YEARS LATER THE UNION WAS COMPLETED...HAWAII WAS ORGANIZED AS A TERRITORY OF THE UNITED STATES.
THE MENU MEASURES 10 1/2" X 11 3/4" AND IS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH SOME SLIGHT EDGE WEAR AND 2 HOLES WERE PUNCHED TO PUT IN A NOTEBOOK.  SOME OF THE DISHES BEING SERVED WERE HAWAIIAN KOKO CHIPS, MARINADED BISMARCK HERRING, POACHED ROCK COD, BROILED BABY HALIBUT WITH COLBERT, FRIED BREAST OF CHICKEN WITH CORN FRITTER, ROAST LONG ISLAND DUCKLING WITH NATURAL GRAVY, CARROTS VICHY, COLD SLICED BREAST OF MARYLAND TURKEY WITH CRANBERRY JELLY AND MORE.  GREAT OLD MENU.
