Description
Original vintage photo taken on board of the German Ocean Liner, the S.S. General Von Steuben, dates between 1930 and 1938, of a group of passengers in costumes, with a banner reading "General V. Steuben" on the floor in front of them. A ship's officer is standing at right in the back row. Note the woman seated in the center on the 1st row, holding a Black doll or puppet. The
S.S. General Von Steuben
was first launched in 1923 as the "Munchen", but was renamed the General Von Steuben in 1930 after being repaired in NYC following a major fire, in honor of the German-American Revolutionary War General, but was renamed in 1938 as the "Steuben" (the Nazi Govt. didn't find it appropriate for the ship to be named after an American General). During World War II, the ship served the German war effort, and on Feb. 10, 1945, while transporting refugees and soldiers fleeing the Russian advance into East Prussia and the Baltic, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by Soviet Sub S-13, with an estimated 4,500 deaths.
A scarce photo taken on board this Ocean liner during happier days, before it's tragic end.
Measures approx. 7" x 4-3/4".
The top right and bottom left corners are torn, not affecting the image, small nick at the top edge, and there are a few creases.
